Material, styles, staining and why wood became the price-stable choice in 2026.
What wood do you use?
Pressure-treated pine for nearly every project. We can source cedar by request, but it is expensive and does not typically do well in East Tennessee clay without special installation, so we rarely recommend it here.
Why is wood the price-stable choice in 2026?
Section 232 tariffs pushed imported steel and aluminum to 50 percent, with aluminum mill shapes up roughly 33 percent year over year and steel about 20 percent. Softwood lumber carries a much lower 10 percent tariff. Wood is not immune, but it rose far less than metal.
Board-on-board or shadowbox?
Board-on-board overlaps pickets on one side, giving full privacy with no gaps — and the overlap absorbs seasonal wood movement rather than opening up. Shadowbox alternates pickets front and back, looks finished from both sides and lets air through, but gives partial sightlines at an angle.
What does a wood fence cost?
Roughly $14 to $50 per linear foot installed, depending on height, style and terrain. A 150-foot back yard commonly lands between about $2,100 and $7,500. Costs by length.
Do I need to stain or seal it?
Not required, but it extends life and keeps the colour. Pressure-treated pine needs to dry out before it will accept stain — usually several months after installation. Staining too early traps moisture and the finish fails.
Will the boards warp or cup?
Some movement is normal with any solid wood in this climate — humid summers and wet winters. Board-on-board handles it better than a flat picket run because the overlap absorbs the shift rather than opening gaps.
Which side of a wood fence faces the neighbor?
The smooth finished side faces out, rails and posts on your side. Convention rather than state law, frequently an HOA requirement, and it keeps the climbable rails inside your property. Full answer.
Why do wood fences lean?
Post depth, almost always. A solid panel catches wind like a sail, and East Tennessee red clay swells wet and shrinks dry, working shallow posts loose. Depth of about a third of the above-ground height, minimum near 24 inches, deeper at gates and corners. Why depth beats material.
How long will a wood fence last?
Depends far more on the posts and drainage than on the pickets. Pickets are replaceable; a rotted or leaning post is a rebuild. Concrete that sheds water away from the post rather than cupping around it makes the difference.
Can a wood fence follow a slope?
Yes — stepped in level increments or racked to follow grade. Solid privacy usually gets stepped, which leaves triangular gaps at the bottom on steep ground. Sloped runs commonly add 10 to 25 percent.
