Gate Questions, Answered

Driveway gates, automatic operators and the repairs nobody else seems to want to talk about.

How much does an automatic driveway gate cost in Knoxville?

There is no honest single number, because the gate is usually the cheaper half. What moves the price is the opening width, single leaf versus double, the operator, and how far power has to be trenched to reach it. A gate 150 feet from the nearest power source can cost more in trenching than in steel. We quote after a site visit rather than guessing over the phone — call (865) 988-9935.

Can you add an automatic opener to a gate I already have?

Often yes, but the gate has to be worth automating. An operator will find every weakness in a gate and its posts — a leaf that already sags will sag faster under a machine cycling it several times a day. We check leaf weight, frame squareness and hinge-post footing first, and will tell you if the honest answer is a new gate rather than a motor on an old one.

Should I use a swing gate or a slide gate?

A swing gate needs a clear, reasonably level arc to open into, and room to stand back from the road. A slide gate is the answer for a short driveway, a driveway that climbs away from the road, or an opening where a swinging leaf would foul on the grade. East Tennessee driveways slope more often than not, which is why we build more cantilever slide gates here than you might expect.

Do you repair automatic gate operators you did not install?

Yes. We service and repair gate operators regardless of who put them in — failed control boards, dead loop detectors, keypads and card readers that have stopped talking to the operator, chains and drive wheels, and gates knocked off their track by a vehicle.

Why does my gate sag and drag on the ground?

Almost always the hinge post, not the gate. A gate is a lever, and its whole weight is trying to pull the hinge post over toward the opening. If the footing is undersized or the post is set in soil that stays wet, the post leans and the far corner drops. Fixing the leaf alone is why some gates get “repaired” three times — the post has to be reset, and on a heavy leaf a diagonal brace or a gate wheel earns its keep.

What safety equipment does an automatic gate legally need?

Automatic vehicular gates are governed by UL 325, the standard covering entrapment protection. In practice that means the operator must reverse on obstruction and be paired with external devices — photo eyes, edge sensors or both — so the gate cannot close on a person or vehicle. An automatic gate running without its entrapment protection is a liability exposure, not just a nuisance, and it is the single most common thing we find missing on gates installed by someone else.

Do I need a permit for a driveway gate in Knox County?

The fence and gate themselves generally do not require a building permit in unincorporated Knox County, which amended the residential code exemption to read simply “Fences” — with no height threshold. The power feed to an automatic operator is separate electrical work and is treated as such. Rules differ inside the City of Knoxville and the Town of Farragut, so confirm your address with Knox County Codes Administration at (865) 215-2325 before you order.

Do you build custom gates to match an existing fence?

Yes. We build wood and aluminum gates to the opening rather than forcing a stock size into it, and match picket spacing, cap detail and finish to the fence already standing. That includes oversized walk gates, double drive gates and gates wide enough for a tractor or a hay trailer.

How wide should a driveway gate be?

As a practical matter, 12 feet of clear opening handles cars and most pickups comfortably. If a trailer, RV, boat, dump truck or fire apparatus needs to get through, plan on 14 to 16 feet, and remember that a truck turning in off the road needs more clear width than one approaching straight on. Wide openings are usually better as a double leaf or a slide gate than as one very long swinging leaf.

Can you gate a driveway that is steep or right on the road?

Usually, and this is where the design matters most. The gate needs to sit far enough back that a vehicle can wait for it to open without its tail hanging in the travel lane — on a busy road that setback is a safety requirement, not a preference. On a climbing driveway a slide gate avoids the swinging-leaf-into-the-grade problem entirely. We look at the approach, the slope and the sight lines on the site visit.
