Cost, gauge, coatings and privacy slats — what actually matters when specifying chain link.
Roughly $10 to $40 per linear foot installed, depending on height, gauge and coating. It remains the lowest installed cost per foot of any material we install. Full 2026 cost breakdown.
Yes. Chain link is steel, and Section 232 tariffs reached 50 percent on imported steel and aluminum in 2026, with steel mill products up roughly 20 percent year over year. Softwood lumber carries a much lower 10 percent tariff, so wood has been the more price-stable material this year.
Galvanized is the standard and costs less. Vinyl-coated adds a polymer layer over the galvanized wire, comes in black, green or brown, and disappears visually against a treeline far better than bright galvanized does. Black vinyl-coated is the usual pick when appearance matters.
Lower gauge numbers mean thicker wire. Residential typically uses 11 or 11.5 gauge; commercial and industrial applications use 9 gauge or heavier. Gauge, framework diameter and post spacing together determine how the fence holds up — not the fabric alone.
Partially. Privacy slats woven through the fabric give roughly 75 to 90 percent screening depending on the type. They do not match a solid wood or vinyl panel, but they cost considerably less and let wind through — which is easier on posts.
Very. It contains most dogs reliably, you can see through it, and it is the most affordable way to enclose a large yard. For diggers, the bottom needs attention — a tension wire or bottom rail helps. For climbers, height matters more than material.
Better than most materials. The fabric can follow grade continuously rather than requiring stepped panels, which is why it suits rolling East Tennessee lots. Slope still adds labor — commonly 10 to 25 percent to installed cost.
Decades when installed properly. As with every fence here, the posts decide it. East Tennessee clay swells wet and shrinks dry and works shallow posts out of plumb, and terminal, corner and gate posts carry the tension of the whole run.
Depends on jurisdiction and height. Requirements differ by several feet between neighboring towns here. Note that many HOA covenants prohibit chain link in front and side yards entirely — check before ordering.
It is the backbone of commercial and industrial perimeter security. Heavier gauge, larger framework, taller heights, barbed or razor top guard where appropriate, and gates sized for equipment access. See our commercial work.
