An automated gate is regulated equipment, not a fence with a motor

This is the part of a Turkey Creek project that gets underestimated. Two documents do different jobs: UL 325 governs the operator, ASTM F2200 governs how the gate is built. A gate satisfying one and not the other is not compliant. Ask any bidder which class the site is and how entrapment protection is provided.

UL 325 and the four operator classes

UL 325 classes vehicular gate operators by the site they serve:

• Class I — a one-to-four-family residence.
• Class II — a commercial site the public can reach: apartments of five or more units, hotels, retail.
• Class III — industrial or limited-access property not serving the public.
• Class IV — guarded, restricted-access property with supervised access control.

Most of what gets built around Turkey Creek is Class II. The operator must be listed for the class it serves; a residential-class operator on a retail or multi-family entrance is a common and serious error.

UL 325 requires two independent means of entrapment protection per entrapment zone. Since the 7th edition tables took effect on 1 August 2018, external entrapment protection devices must be monitored — the operator has to know the device is present and working, and fail safe when it is not. Photo eyes and edges are part of the control system, not accessories bolted on afterward.

ASTM F2200 and how the gate is built

F2200 addresses the gate itself and the openings in and around it:

• Gaps between the gate and an adjacent support no more than 2¼ inches.
• No 2¼-inch sphere able to pass through the gate below a height of 48 inches.
• No 4-inch sphere able to pass between 48 and 72 inches.
• Positive stops at both ends of travel, so the gate cannot run off its track.
• Exposed rollers below 8 feet guarded.

Those numbers decide infill, picket spacing and frame detailing before fabrication, not after. Retrofitting is usually dearer than building it right, and an operator added to a gate never built to F2200 is not a compliant installation.

Commercial fence pricing

Installed cost per linear foot for the fence line. Gate leaves, operators, loop detectors, access controls, power and conduit are quoted separately; on an automated entrance the equipment often exceeds the cost of the fence around it.

Dumpster enclosures that survive the collection schedule

An enclosure is hit by a truck on a route, week after week, and that is what it is engineered for: heavier posts than a boundary fence, gate frames sized for the span rather than the catalog default, hardware rated for the cycle count, and drop rods with proper receivers so the leaves hold open instead of walking into the truck path.

Most enclosures we repair failed at the gate, not the wall: sagged frames, hinges torn out, no positive stop so the leaf overswings into the post. Specify the clear opening for the vehicle that actually services the site, and confirm whether the district requires screening to a set standard — check with the jurisdiction, since it may or may not reach a given parcel.

Chain link with privacy slats

Slatted chain link is the practical answer when a site needs the view cut but a solid wall is not warranted. It screens equipment yards, inventory and staging areas for a fraction of a solid panel of the same length. Slats change the fence: a filled run carries far more wind load than open mesh, so posts, footings and bracing must be sized for the fill, not the bare fabric. A fence that was fine open can lean once filled, which is why we size the framework at the start.

Jurisdiction, licensing, and utilities before the auger runs

Turkey Creek addresses may fall inside the City of Knoxville or in unincorporated Knox County, which determines the governing ordinance. In the city, Article 10, Section 10.3.L caps a privacy fence forward of the front building line at 42 inches; side and rear yards are not held to that. In the county, Section 3.20.04 restricts obstruction to vision in the sight triangle at an intersection, and a solid panel counts — relevant where a site drive meets a public road. Commercial districts often add screening and buffer requirements; confirm what applies to your parcel before design.

Tennessee requires a contractor's license at $25,000 and above, before bidding or negotiating a price — on commercial work, before a proposal is handed over. Tennessee 811 requires three working days' notice before excavation; the ticket is valid 15 days and the tolerance zone is at least four feet. Private lines are not covered by the free locate, and a commercial site is dense with them — lot lighting, irrigation, sign feeds, the conduit for the gate operator itself. Those need a private locate. Depth to bedrock in Knox County ranges from roughly 7 inches on shallow ridge soils to over 60 inches on deeper ones, which drives footing design for gate posts.
