Not All Contractors In East Tennessee Are Equal

Yesterday, we shared a video highlighting the importance of checking contractor licences — and it bears repeating. Homeowners and business owners in Tennessee often assume that anyone advertising contracting work holds the licence classification required for the job. That is worth verifying rather than assuming, and the good news is that it takes about a minute.

Tennessee's contractor licence records are free and public. Search any licence number at verify.tn.gov and the record shows the licence classification, the monetary limit, current status and expiration date — and any disciplinary history on file. That is a database anyone can check, on anyone, including us.

Two things worth understanding about what you will see there:

Monetary limit. Tennessee caps most contractors at a dollar value of project they may legally bid. An Unlimited classification carries no cap. For a backyard fence that cap is usually irrelevant, and plenty of good contractors hold a limited classification — it matters when a project is large enough to exceed someone's limit.

Status. Licences expire and have to be renewed. A number that was valid when it went on a website is not necessarily valid today.
