It is not one thing, it is three working together. Ultraviolet light breaks down the surface fibers and turns the wood gray. Rain and humidity drive moisture into the grain, and East Tennessee has plenty of both. Then the wood swells, dries, and swells again, and the repeated cycle opens checks and splits that hold water. A finish slows all three down. Bare wood has no defense against any of them.

Apply in the wrong conditions — direct hot sun, high humidity, or with rain in the forecast — and it will not cure properly. Late spring through early fall gives the best window here, on a dry stretch with moderate temperatures.

We clean the fence first, because a finish applied over mildew, dirt or chalky gray fiber will fail no matter how good the product is. We make any repairs that need to happen before finishing, mask what needs masking, and apply the finish evenly on all exposed faces including the tops of pickets and posts, which is where water gets in.
