Gates are where fences fail first. Here is what decides whether yours keeps working.
Why do gates sag when the fence is fine?
Because a gate is a lever and the hinge post carries all of it. Everything pulls against that one post, and in East Tennessee clay an undersized footing works loose. Gate posts need to be set deeper than line posts, and the wider the gate the more that matters. Why depth decides it.
How wide should a gate be?
Three to four feet for walk gates. For anything you need to drive through, measure the actual equipment — mowers, trailers and trucks need more clearance than people estimate, and a gate that is six inches too narrow is a permanent annoyance. Double gates handle wide openings without a single heavy leaf.
Swing or slide?
Swing suits level ground with clear arc space either side. Slide suits sloped driveways, tight approaches, or openings too wide for a swing leaf. Cantilever slide gates need side room to retract but put no track in the drive surface, which matters where debris or snow would foul it.
What hardware actually matters?
Hinges sized for leaf weight, not for the fence. On heavy or high-cycle gates, the cheapest hinge is the part that fails first — and it usually takes the post alignment with it. Drop rods or cane bolts on double gates stop the leaves swinging in wind.
Do you install automated gates?

What does an automated gate need for power?
Most operators need dedicated power run to the gate, which means trenching from the nearest source. On a long driveway that trench is often the largest single cost in the job. Solar is an option on low-cycle residential gates where running power is impractical.
Are safety devices required on automated gates?
Yes. An automated gate is powered machinery with genuine entrapment risk. Photo eyes, edge sensors and the correct operator class for the gate weight all matter — particularly on sites with public or pedestrian traffic.
What gate does a pool need?
Pool barrier code requires self-closing, self-latching hardware with the latch above a specified height, plus limits on gaps beneath and between pickets. Pool fences are usually permitted separately from general fence rules, regardless of height.
How much does a gate add to a fence project?
A few hundred dollars each for standard walk and drive gates, depending on width and hardware. Automated gates are a separate category. Gate posts also need deeper footings, which is part of why they cost more than the same footage of plain fence.
Can you repair a gate you did not install?
